New developments in seed choices

While all the major seed brands (mostly owned by chemical companies) have moved away from alfalfa as a product line, Byron Seeds has gone direct to the major independent seed growers and picked up their newest varieties in their support of cattle feeding and maintaining soil fertility.

Alfalfa is a crop that develops some serious plant root, either the traditional tap root varieties, or the newer branch root and creeping root/sunken crown types (able to handle wetter soils and reduce heaving during spring thaws). It fixes nitrogen in the root zone, which is one of the reasons your best corn crop comes when you "retire" an alfalfa stand.

In the Kingfisher premium seed line, the Byron emphasis is on the Synergy X concept. Two to four varieties of alfalfa get blended together in the same bag. What appears to happen in the field is a more vigorous and even stand that will usually come from a single variety. Multi species competition stimulates better root development earlier in the life of the stand.

More and more, the cattle feeding industry is recognizing that a mixture--- varieties handling soil type variation, species handling pH variation, alfalfa and clover both providing nitrogen fixation to feed the protein production of grasses interseeded with the legumes -- all makes higher yields over a longer stand life possible even when under aggressive cutting schedules.

Lots of beef producers are moving away from corn silage and toward hay balage mixes for growing animals and winter feeding. This can reduce your machinery overhead dramatically, reduce the labor needed at harvest time, and spread the harvest window across the growing season (rather than all in the fall).
